This trip kind of popped out of nowhere, when Rachel invited me to come and photograph her family in Santa Fe. It was my first time travelling without Zara… in fact my first time travelling alone at all! So not waiting to add any extra anxiety to my anticipation of the trip, I did something uncharacteristic and didn’t make a huge, heavily-researched itinerary for the long weekend. I told Rachel my plans were to eat some New Mexican food, check out a museum, drink some local beer, maybe do a hike. Check, check, check, and check.
I visited the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, Meow Wolf, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the Museum of International Folk Art. I hiked Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument and strolled the galleries and shops of Canyon Road. I was haunted by the ghost of Anthony Bourdain: news of his death broke about a half hour before I left for the airport, my in-flight magazine featured an interview with him, and then I followed his footprints straight to the Frito Pie at Five & Dime. I lounged at the Japanese-style spa Ten Thousand Waves. I drank wine on a patio at sunset and didn’t see a single mosquito. (That may have been the most magical thing of all.)
I had an excellent time.
